Summary

You can get an installment loan in Manitoba with bad credit. Through CashGo, you apply once and get matched with lenders in our network that typically offer $300 to $3,000, repaid over 90 to 120 days at 22% to 32% APR. Manitoba has some of the broadest high-cost credit rules in Canada: a loan of $5,000 or less counts as high-cost credit if its interest rate is above 32%, or if it charges any fee on top of interest. High-cost lenders must be licensed by Manitoba's Consumer Protection Office, and you can cancel within 48 hours. A Manitoba payday loan can cost up to $14 for every $100 borrowed: on $500, that's $70 due at once, compared with about $25 spread over seven payments for a typical installment loan.

How installment loans work in Manitoba

An installment loan is a personal loan you repay in equal, scheduled payments that line up with your pay, whether you're paid weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly. Each payment covers part of what you borrowed plus interest.

You apply once online, from anywhere in Manitoba. CashGo sends your application to lenders in our network. A lender that can help contacts you and asks you to complete Instant Banking Verification, a read-only look at your recent transactions; you don't need to send ID or paperwork. The lender then shows you the rate, every fee and the total you'll repay, and deposits the money once you sign its contract, often the same day.

CashGo is not a lender. Each lender sets its own rate, fees and schedule.

How Manitoba regulates high-cost loans

Manitoba's high-cost credit rules cover two kinds of loans. The first is any loan with an annual interest rate above 32%. The second is a loan of $5,000 or less, for up to two years and not secured by your property, that charges interest of up to 32% plus one or more fees, such as a fee paid to the lender or to a third party.

Some lenders in our network charge membership fees, so a loan you're offered may count as high-cost credit in Manitoba. If it does, the lender must be licensed with the Consumer Protection Office, and you get these protections:

  • Before you sign, the lender must give you a disclosure document with the APR, the interest rate, the total cost and the fees.
  • You can cancel the agreement within 48 hours, not counting Sundays and holidays.
  • The lender can't charge you a fee for paying the loan off early.
  • The lender can't hold back part of the amount you borrowed.

Payday loan rules in Manitoba

  • A payday loan can't cost more than $14 for every $100 borrowed. These loans are for up to $1,500 and 62 days.
  • A single payday loan can't be more than 30% of your net pay.
  • You can cancel within 48 hours, not counting Sundays and holidays.
  • A replacement, extension or renewal loan, or a new loan taken within seven days of repaying another, can cost no more than 5% of the amount borrowed.
  • A lender can't take security for the loan or have you sign a document that lets it collect from your employer, and you can't have two payday loans at once.
  • Every location that offers payday loans to Manitobans, including online, needs a licence.

Checking a lender and making a complaint

Bad credit doesn't rule you out, because lenders look mainly at your income and recent banking. Applying doesn't commit you to a loan; you only agree to one when you sign a lender's contract.
